Frequently Asked Questions
Therapy can be confusing, here are some answers to common questions to help get you started. Remember, you can always contact us for a free consultation at any time and we will happily explain any additional questions you may have.
WHAT QUESTIONS CAN I ASK DURING MY FREE 10-15 MINUTE CONSULTATION?
There are no wrong questions here! But I’d encourage you to think about what you’d like to work on, essentially, what made you want to seek out therapy? If there are certain modality you prefer (CBT, parts work etc). This is a great time to get a sense of goodness-of-fit, meaning are we a good fit for each other.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING MY FRIST SESSION?
In our first session together, we will always review the limits of confidentiality, practice policies, scheduling, and cancellation fees. Thereafter, my number one priority is to get to you know you, the best possible comprehensive picture in a manner that you are comfortable and ready to do so.
WHAT IF THIS IS MY FIRST TIME EVER IN THERAPY?
Congratulations on taking the hardest and most brave step – you’re here, asking for help, taking a chance and that is the biggest accomplishment. It is completely natural to feel nervous and we can absolutely explore that and any other questions you may have- there really isn’t a “wrong” way of “doing” therapy. I’m a firm believer in transparency and honesty for our therapeutic relationship. And I promise, I will not only ask you “how does that make you feel.”
HOW LONG IS A TYPICAL THERPAY SESSION?
Typically, each therapy session lasts between 50 minutes to an hour on a weekly basis. Bi-weekly sessions are also offered after one month of weekly sessions. This is to establish a strong therapeutic relationship and decide together given your journey if that would be clinically sound. Many clients start weekly and after a period of time move to every other week.
CAN YOU PRESCRIBE MEDICATION?
Only a psychiatrist, nurse practitioner, or your primary care doctor can prescribe medication.
As your therapist, I can help provide referrals for a psychiatrist or offer support in how to navigate finding a doctor. You can also reach out to your insurance company for a list of in-network providers who can prescribe medication.
HOW IS MY PRIVACY AND PHI (personal health information) protected?
I only utilize software platforms that are HIPAA-compliant and you can always review Untangled Paths’ Notice of Practice Policies for additional information.
HOW DO ONLINE SESSIONS (Telehealth) WORK?
In the comfort of your own home (or anywhere you have privacy) you will be provided with a link or instructions for a HIPAA-compliant site for online sessions. The software platform that I use is Simple Practice. I will ask you to download a FREE app in which we text/message to keep your privacy safe, it is easy. Details will be provided in the email confirming your initial appointment upon confirming an appointment with me.
I will log in at the scheduled meeting time to start your session. If you have any difficulties with logging in, please contact me via text (also HIPAA compliant via the SP app) and I will assist you.
WHAT IS A GOOD FAITH ESTIMATE?
You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical and mental health care will cost.
Under the law, healthcare providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including licensed clinical social work and therapy services. You have the right to receive a good faith estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency healthcare services, including therapy services.
You can ask your healthcare provider and any other provider you choose before you schedule a service.
If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your good faith estimate, you can dispute this bill. Make sure to save a copy or picture of your good faith estimate.
For questions or more information about your right to a good faith estimate, visit: www.cms.gov/nosurprises.
